My great-grandfather was Levi Grindle. He was born in April 1827 in what is now Pennsylvania (Western). He died July 26, 1901. His home was in Empire, Knox Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. He died on a train between Canton and Steubenville.

Levi is listed on the Veterans and Widows Census for 1890. Levi served in the West Virginia Infantry Co. B Aug. 7, 1861 to Oct. 18, 1862. He was disabled at Harris Landing, Virginia and was later sent to Ft. Monroe and then hospitalized in Alexandria, Virginia for ulcerated feet due to marching through swamps.

He was discharged at Harper’s Ferry on Oct. 18, 1862. He re-enlisted with the 1st Cavalry Co. E, Aug. 7, 1861 to Oct. 18, 1862. He received a disability pension.

Levi married Rachel Catherine Whipkey. They are both buried in the Toronto Union Cemetery.
