Robert E. Heaton

Robert (Bob) E Heaton is retired from the AEP. He retired after 36 years as a supervising draftsman in the maps and records department.

Bob was born in Toronto, Jefferson County, Ohio and has lived in this area most of his life. His wife of 45 years is Sally Metzgar Heaton and they have one daughter, Wendy Heaton Butcher.

His hobbies include; collecting local area history postcards, and spending time on his ham radio. His other interests include; reading local history, going to flea markets, sales and collecting of antiques.

Bob’s father is the late, Robert Laird Heaton of Ravenrock, West Virginia. His paternal grandparents were Charles R Heaton born in 1891 and died in 1917. Charles drowned on the Ohio River at which time he was working at lock nine in New Cumberland, West Virginia. Charles’ wife was Dora Lenora Steel. Dora was born in 1892.

Bob’s maternal lines run deep in Ohio and West Virginia. His mother, Ruth Helen Joy is still living. (As of Summer of 2003) She was born in New Cumberland, West Virginia. Ruth’s parents were John Everard Joy, born 11 Nov 1889 in Washington County Ohio. John died the 28th of May 1949 in Steubenville Ohio. John’s wife was Bessie Prosser Johnston. She was born 20 Aug 1892 in New Cumberland, West Virginia. She died on the 11th of Dec 1925 in New Cumberland, West Virginia. Bessie’s parents were John Miller Johnston, who was born 6 June 1856 in New Cumberland, West Virginia. His wife was Sarah Elizabeth Prosser, born 13 Jun 1859 in New Cumberland West Virginia. Sarah died on the 30th of Oct 1920.

Bob Heaton is involved with the ongoing Cemetery Project here in Jefferson County. He is the project’s mapping specialist. He has been of great assistance thus far and his knowledge of the rural townships in our county has been very helpful in locating and “mapping out” the locations of some of the smaller, private, rural cemeteries.
