GOULD FAMILY HISTORY

This photo is not dated, but we believe it to be about 1908. Seated are Uriah B. Gould and Mary Jane Thomas Gould. Uriah was born in Middlesex Hundred, Baltimore County, Maryland, November 30th 1817. His parents William and Mary Rhea Gould moved to the farm on Cross Creek that we know today as the Community of Goulds in 1819. The family home in background , known as the Stonehouse, was built in 1833 by Daniel Johnson and John McKinley at a cost of 75cents per perch, only the foundation remains today. William and Mary lived out their days in Jefferson County and were buried in the Loyd Family Cemetery then owned by their son-in-law and daughter John Loyd, Jr. and Myra Jane Gould Loyd. Uriah and Mary Jane returned from Iowa to the family farm on Cross Creek, where they raised their nine children, two of whom are in the photo. Harry E. Gould, my grandfather is standing behind his father. To the right is George Gould and his wife Clara Hook Gould. Clara is the granddaughter of Jonathan Hook whose family also lived in Middlesex Hundred, Baltimore County, Maryland and who in 1813 purchased the parcel of land that encompassed the Gould Farm and the adjacent Hook Farm before selling the southern half to his friend, William Gould. It was Aunt Clara who became the family historian recording many of the family stories as well as the events of the Cross Creek region for over 50 years. The boy between his grandparents is Walter Gould, son of George and Clara. Uriah died about one year after this photo and when Mary Jane died in 1913 and joined her husband in the Loyd Cemetery she became the last burial in this cemetery.
