Mc)WHAN Researching for sometime now an ancestor who lived in Steubenville around the 1820’s named William Whan. Wm. purchased the Eagle Foundry in Steubenville on October 10, 1829. According to an ad in the Western Herald and Steubenville Gazette he died around April of 1832. Wm. wife’s name was Jane. I found a Wm. and Jane Whan buried in the Steubenville Union Cemetery. They were removed from a burial ground in the middle of town about August of 1859 records showed. In the Steubenville Sesquicentennial 1797-1947 it states that, “the first burial grounds for the while race were given by Bezaleel Wells to the Presbyterians and Methodists and were located where the Grant School now stands and the other intersection of fourth and fifth streets…” Cemetery records showed Wm.’s age at death was 57 and Jane’s age was 48.
