• A Letter from the Assistant to the Administer, pension office: {Letter dated November 4, 1933, Nathan Shaw, R.9441} Addressed to Mrs. H.D. Sheppard, 117 Frederick Street, Hanover, Pennsylvania. Dear Madam: Reference is made to your relative Nathan or Nathaniel Shaw of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Revolutionary War data furnished by this office are obtained from claims made to the United States for pension and bounty land based upon military service of soldiers in that war…The history of the only Nathan Shaw of New Jersey is furnished you herewith. Nathan Shaw married July 2, 1780 in Cumberland County, New Jersey, Juliana or Julia Ann Miller, who was born November 9, 1761, place and names of parents not stated. About 1780 or 1800 they were residents of Washington County, Pennsylvania. Soldier died June 24, 1830 in Knox Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. The date and place of his birth and names of his parents are not stated. On June 6, 1840, soldier’s widow, Juliana or Julia Ann Shaw, while a resident of Augusta Township, Carroll County, Ohio, applied for pension… her husband and stated that he served more than six months as ensign and lieutenant under Captains Jonathan Smith, Jonathan Beesley and George McGaughlin and Colonel Hand in the New Jersey troops and that he was in the battles of Trenton and Princeton. Her claim was not allowed… The names of the children of Nathan and Juliana or Julia Ann Shaw are shown as follows:

• Common Pleas record, State of Ohio, Carroll County, Ohio 6th day of June, A.D. 1840: personally appeared before me, Robert McElderry one of the associate judges of the court of common pleas of said county Juliana Shaw aged seventy nine years on the 9th day of November next of the Township Augusta make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit…That she was married to Nathan Shaw on the 2nd day of July in the year of 1780 or 1781 in the County of Cumberland in the State of New Jersey in the company of Jonathan Smith…Nathan Shaw, died on the 24th day of June 1820 in Knox Township, Jefferson County, Ohio with inflammation of the kidney’s as was supposed by his physician as will appear from the testimony herein… her husband never applied for a pension, to the best of her knowledge or received that she has no record of her marriage at this time. She has a family record of births of her children at one of her daughters in the county of Jefferson aforesaid, but recollected the age of her first child, the eldest Michael was born on the 1st day of November 1781, Richard on the 24 November 1781, shortly after the time Sinclair defeated the Indians, Joshua was born 4th of April 1795, Hannah on the 29th June 1797, Rebeca on 12 Jul 1799, Sarah on the 20 of June 1801 the youngest twins, Joseph and Sina on the 10th of March 1804 and her maiden name of Juliana Miller that her husband remained in the military service for time after their marriage. She well recollects of her husband talking of a boot belonging to a British Soldier… Juliana Shaw, {mark} dated 6th day of June, A.D. 1840.

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Fayette County – On this first day of October 1840 personally appeared before me, Jno. Gibson as for James Shaw Senior of the town of Connellsville in the county and state aforesaid who being seventy one years of age on the fifteenth of January past and he was intimately ----with Nathan Shaw who was a Lieutenant in a company commanded by Captain Jonathan Beesley of the New Jersey Lines his Col’s name I know was Hand his first name I do not recollect but I am confident the said Nathan Shaw served two company’s one as an Ensign and the other as Lieutenant there said Nathan Shaw served at different intervals for more than six months that in the year 1780 or 1781 he was married unto Juliana Miller…the said Nathan Shaw and Juliana Shaw removed into the county of Jefferson in the state of Ohio, where they continued to reside until his death, which took place sometime in the year of 1820 the said Juliana Shaw is still living, and is now an applicant for a pension. The James Shaw saith that Nathan Shaw Sr. was on a part who captured a British --- which was coming up Morris River with a view of taking American troops which was laying in wait. That the above said capture was after the marriage of his wife and that for a several years after Nathan Shaw had removed from Jersey to Ohio…said he was commissioned as a Lieut… Signed, James Shaw.
