The following article was submitted by Jennifer Allen-Millhorn. Jennifer has many “roots” connected to Jefferson County and has been researching her genealogy for over four years. Her 5th Great Grandfather, Andreas Ault was a pioneer of Jefferson County settling here in 1795 and owning 667 acres in Island Creek Township. Her 5th Great Grandfather, Michael “Auver” Myers, the Indian Scout, settled in Newburg, (Toronto) Jefferson County in 1795 and built a mill on Croxton’s Run. Her 5th Great Grandfather, Henry Norman settled in Salem Township, Jefferson County in 1814, settling on the old John Thompson Farm and opening a hotel. Jennifer’s 2nd Great Grandfather was Charles W. Beswick. He was the son of William and Mary Beswick of England. Charles settled in Warren Township in 1890. He was Mayor of Tiltonsville for over twenty years and was also involved in organizing the first Tiltonsville Fire Department in 1917 and for 11 years he had been a bailiff in the common pleas court of Steubenville. He married Etta Jarvis, daughter of James P. and Mary Wright Jarvis of Warren Township. James P. Jarvis was the son of William and Elizabeth Cochran Jarvis, who were pioneer settlers in Warren Township, Jefferson County, Ohio.
Jennifer’s 4th Great Grandfather, David Morrow, came to Island Creek, Jefferson County in 1835. Island Creek Church Records state that David was, “In a shooting match in the winter of 1835…not to use ardent spirits on any occasion except as medicine.” His wife, Rebecca Moreland Morrow, came from Fayette County, Pennsylvania in 1812. Her father, John Moreland, started a Tavern on Fourth Street in Steubenville. Jennifer’s 4th Great Grandfather, William Taggart, came to Jefferson County around 1820. He ran a productive farm in Knox Township until his death in 1857. Her 4th Great Grandfather, William A. Bake, came to America in 1813 from Darce, Yorkshire, England. The family settled in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania before coming to Warren Township, Jefferson County in 1870.
