Death of Elijah Cole, Richmond, Reduced County Ranks to 5

The death of Elijah Cole, a Civil War veteran of Richmond brings the number of Civil war veterans in Jefferson County down to five, where there were seven on last Decoration Day. The five are Joseph C Bowers, Steubenville; William Thomas, Wintersville; Charles Blackburn, Smithfield; John Brady, Toronto; Frank Hohl, of Richmond. The other death in the interim was John Culp of Richmond.

Mr. Cole, who was a descendant of a influential pioneer family, died Saturday at 5p.m. He was the son of Ezekiel and Eliza Cole. His widow, Ann E. Cole and two daughters Mrs. Mary S. Davis, and Mrs. R. B. Calhoun of Kenova, WV survive him, children of a former marriage. Also a sister Mrs. Matilda Plotts, a granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of Harry Hales Post G.A.R. in its day. Funeral services were held on Monday at 2p.m. at Richmond M.E. Church and the rites of the G.A.R. were given him at Union Cemetery, Richmond.

Mr. Cole enlisted May 18, 1861, at Wellsburg in Co. G. 1st WV. Regiment. He participated in all the ups and downs of that regiment including the battle of Phillippi. He was discharged at Wheeling Island August 28, 1861. While at Phillippi he received from the Richmond people, a box containing pie, cake, chicken, and it was eaten though moldy, so hungry were the soldier boys, but it made them sick.

Mr. Cole enlisted in Co G. 52 Ohio at Camp Dennison on December 10,1861. In January 1862 the regiment was disbanded. He was transferred to Co. K. 71 Ohio. He was injured in the back and hips at Pittsburgh landing, went to Evansville, Indiana hospital and later went home on a furlough. He went back to Camp Dennison and on Sept 10, 1862 was discharged for disability.” (Submitted by: Flora L VerStraten, direct descendant)

(History of the Upper Ohio Valley, Vol. II, published 1890, page 191-192) “Elijah Cole was born Richland, Ohio on 2 August 1843. His grandfather was one of the earliest settlers in the vicinity, and made his home where the cemetery is now located. Ezekiel Cole, father of Elijah, was born at this pioneer home February 2, 1805, and was buried at the same place. The mother of the subject of this sketch was Eliza (Johnston) Cole, who was born about 1810. Elijah received a good education in the common schools and at Richmond College, which he attended five terms. He then took a position with Henry Crew, of Richmond. It was there he was working when the Civil war broke out. After his service in the military, he then engaged in the grocery business at the corner of Fourth and Sycamore streets, Cincinnati and afterward came home and was married. He engaged in the pottery business and then purchased what is known as the Cole House, of Richmond, a hotel which he conducted quite successfully for twenty-one years. He married Mary E. Hayes, born near Ripley, Brown County, December 25, 1843, and died November 23, 1889. She was the daughter of Abel and Mary (Kennedy) Hayes. By this union Mr. Cole had six children.”

More about the house: When researching at the Vivian Snyder Genealogical Library in a notebook Titled, The Ryan Home (owners), dated 1964, Flora found a detailed description of the house and its unique beauty. To my knowledge the homestead is no longer standing.

Jean Scarlott took the photo above at the Union cemetery in Richmond, Salem Twp. From Mr. Thompson’s ledger, he lists Anna E. death date as Nov 9, 1939 at 78 yrs. old. It appears that her date of death was not engraved on her tombstone. Elijah and Anna are buried in Section A, lot 164.

Ezekiel and Elizabeth Cole, parents of Elijah Cole, are buried in the same cemetery. Ezekiel’s listed death as May 30, 1887, aged 82, section B, lot 21. Elizabeth’s death listed as Sep 8, 1891, aged 80, section B, lot 21.

EZEKIEL COLE

Ezekiel COLE was born the 8th of January 1748, in Baltimore, Maryland the son of Christopher and Sarah Tipton Cole. Ezekiel came from a large family.

The COLE family is of English origin tracing back to the Coles who came to America with Lord Baltimore.

Ezekiel married Sarah Rowland abt. 1772 in Baltimore Maryland and lived in Maryland until after the Revolutionary War. He then came to this area with his three brothers and his wife. Two other brothers went west and were never heard from and many thought they were killed by the Indians, but many years later in 1902 there was a family reunion held and descendants from these two brothers were in attendance.

Ezekiel and his brothers settled here in Ohio. Thomas who lived in Richmond and Samuel (my direct ancestor, who first lived in Jefferson County and when county lines were changed, showed up in German Twp, Harrison County, Ohio). Both brothers served along with Ezekiel in the Revolution with the Maryland troops.

Ezekiel was refused a pension in 1834 because he had served less than 6 months. On September 4, 1895 at Mt Moriah Church, Wayne Twp, Jefferson County, Ohio the COLE’S held a family reunion. There were 173 registered as lineal descendants of Ezekiel.

Ezekiel and Sarah had five known children. Thomas, born about 1774, Ezekiel Jr. 18 April 1775, Joshua 17 October 1779, Elijha 1781, and Sarah Elizabeth, 13 May 1784.

Ezekiel died on September 6th, 1834 at 86 years of age in Richmond, Salem Twp., Jefferson County, Ohio. I once read a family history that stated that Ezekiel is said to be buried in the Richmond Quaker Cemetery on the ground where he first built a log cabin. His wife is buried in the Quaker Cemetery

Our great-grandfather was Charles Patterson Maxwell, b 1872, he was the eldest son of James Henry and Carrie (Cole) Maxwell.

James Henry Maxwell and Carrie Cole had 8 boys and one daughter. (James Henry Maxwell was a brother to David Wakeman Maxwell (Donna Maxwell Tivener' lineage and Donna is our cousin)
