Passing away of John Danner, Esq.- A Pioneer Woolen Manufacturer (Steubenville Weekly Herald Star, Feb., 10, 1905) John Danner one of the older residents of this city and a pioneer in the manufacture of woolen goods, the one time big industry of Steubenville, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Bullock, 508 Washington Street, on Wed. at 5:30p.m. in his 89th year. Though a naturally robust constitution, Mr. Danner had been ill health for several years…Mr. Danner was born in Emmettsburg, MD 88 years ago on Nov 6, 1905. His parents moved to Newark, Ohio in his early childhood and they died there leaving him an orphan at 12 years. He remained there until 18 years old, when he went to Baltimore. He came to Steubenville in 1836 and has ever since resided here. He was an expert woolen goods spinner and worked at that trade for several years when he became interested in the manufacture of woolen goods in several of the factories here. He had charge of the old McDevitt factory for sometime. For a number of years he was also engaged in the grocery business. Twenty-five years ago he retired and lived alongside of his daughter on West Market. His wife, who was Margaret Leeper, preceded him to the grave three years ago. One daughter, Mrs. William Bullock survives. Mr. Danner united with the old First Presbyterian Church in 1837 and after the First Church removed north of Market Street he remained with the Third Church in which he was an elder…He lived to see marvelous changes in the growth of the city and the changes in the character of its manufacturing industries.
