This is the story of three Irishmen who came to Steubenville Ohio, became Americans, and later Patriots. It is also the story of their descendants, Americans and Patriots.

WILLIAM DUNN

William came from County Meath, Ireland at the age of 10, I believe. Most of this history is taken from his brother Edward’s obituary dated Feb. 17, 1902 from the Steubenville Herald Star. William came to America on June 1, 1846, on the Fidelia out of Liverpool. His brother, Ed, age 11 and sister Catherine, age 14, accompanied him. They were orphans and came to live with an uncle who lived in Pittsburgh PA. A Thomas Dunn is listed on the ship’s manifest with them but no relationship is noted. I think that I found them in the 1850 census in Pittsburgh, but the names were so common to the Irish, that I’m not sure. How they came to Steubenville is unknown.

From the Jefferson County Probate Office, a copy of William Dunn’s application for marriage to Hannah White is dated 3 May 1870. They were married by a Catholic Priest, as noted on the courthouse certificate. The author notes that the year of marriage must be wrong by a year, noting their first child was born in May of 1870. The bible and pension file shows a date of marriage as 10 May 1869.

William is listed on the census as a nail or and working for the railroad. He served in Company G, 2nd Regiment OVI from Sep. 26, 1861 to Oct. 10, 1864 as a private. He is listed as a cripple on later records, something about his foot or leg.

William and his two wives were Roman Catholic and members of the St. Peters Church while living in Steubenville. William’s first wife, my great grandmother, Hanna White, died on Nov. 21, 1877 and is buried in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Steubenville. William died on Nov. 15, 1917 in Cleveland and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland, as is his second wife who died May 28, 1914.

William later married Elizabeth Boyle on November 24, 1880. They had a son named William. He moved to Salt Lake City Utah and lived there until his death in Colorado in 1943. He is buried in Wasatch Lawn, Salt Lake City, Utah. Their daughter, Emma, secretly married John P. Burke of Steubenville in 1902 while living in Cleveland. The story of their marriage is noted in the Thomas Burke story, along with the newspaper clipping.

Of William and Elizabeth’s children, I know little about them. Edward died in the Casualty hospital in Washington D.C. and Thomas died on November 22, 1944 in the U.S. Veterans Hospital in Mississippi. This information was taken from a family bible.

Any information on William’s parents is unknown. On his death certificate, his daughter, Kathryn listed his father as William and mother unknown.

Hanna’s parents were James White and Mary, her maiden name is unknown at this time. (This article was submitted by Joanne Lowrie and the article below was also submitted by Joanne.)
