(Steubenville Herald Star, Apr 21, 1902) Death of Ohio Valley Iron Master- W. R. E. Elliott One of the Pioneers in the Iron Business Here Dies Sunday Morning. The death of William Roger Erwin Elliott takes away almost the last of those who were identified with the iron business in this city… Mr. Elliott died at his room in the Imperial Hotel on Sunday morning at 6:15 o’clock, aged 82 years… Mr. Elliott was born at Lancaster, Pa., Sept 24, 1820. His father was Rev. John Elliott, a pioneer Methodist Protestant minister…Mr. Elliott married Sarah A. Swauger in 1845 and they moved to Wheeling. In 1852 he and 21 others organized the La Belle Iron Works Co. and his death leaves John Wright as the only remaining one of the original stockholders… In 1859 he removed to Steubenville and with C. B. Doty was associated with the Spaulding-Woodward. Mr. Elliott had charge of the puddling department of the old Jefferson… and the friend of all the workmen because of his extreme courtesy…a charter member of the Congregational Church, a member of City counsel some years ago… His wife died in 1895 after they had celebrated their golden wedding. Mr. Elliott is survived by three children; Mrs. W. P. Hays, of Chicago, W.L. Elliott, of Boston, and Miss Annie G., of this city, and by one brother, Joseph Elliott, of this city.
