  • Brown, Uriah-Conflict, Civil War
    Birthplace was: Covington, Miami County, Ohio
    Entered the military in Steubenville, Ohio. His rank was Private, Company G, 30th Ohio Infantry. One place of action was Vicksburg, Mississippi. Despite the death of his captain at his side during the assault, he continued carrying his log to the defense ditch. While he was laying his log in place he was shot down and thrown into the water. Unmindful of his own wound he, despite the intense fire, dragged 5 of his comrades from the ditch, wherein they lay wounded, to a place of safety.

  • Burns, James M.-Conflict, Civil War
    Birthplace was Jefferson County, Ohio and he entered service in Jefferson County as well. His rank was Sergeant, from Company B, 1st WV infantry. Place of action was New Market, Virginia on 15 May 1864. He was under heavy fire of musketry, rallied a few men to the support of the colors, in danger of capture and bore them to a place of safety. One of his comrades having been severely wounded in the effort, Sgt. Burns went back a hundred yards in the face of the enemy’s fire and carried the wounded man from the field.

  • Graimshaw, Samuel- Conflict, Civil War. He served in the Army and was born in Jefferson County, Ohio. He entered service in Smithfield, Ohio and his rank was private, Company B, 52nd Ohio Infantry. His place of action was Atlanta, GA. In 6 Aug 1864. He was cited as saving lives of some of his comrades, and greatly imperiled his own by picking up and throwing away a lighted shell, which had fallen in the midst of the company.

  • Hays, John H.- Conflict, Civil War. He served in the Army and was born in Jefferson County, Ohio. He entered service in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. He was a private in Company F, 4th Iowa Cavalry. His place of action is listed as Columbus, GA on 16 April 1865. He captured a flag and bearer of Austin’s Battery (C.S.A.)

  • McGonagle, Wilson- Conflict, Civil War. He served in the Army and was born in Jefferson County, Ohio. He entered service in Cadiz, Ohio and was a private in Company B, 30th Ohio Infantry. He saw action in Vicksburg, Mississippi on 22 May 1863. He was cited for gallantry in the charge of the “volunteer storming party.”

  • Pittinger, William- Conflict, Civil War. He was born 31 Jan., 1840 in Knoxville, Jefferson County, Ohio and served in the Army out of Jefferson County and was the 5th to receive the Medal of Honor. His rank was Sergeant in Company G, 2nd Ohio Infantry. He saw action in April of 1862. He was cited as one of the 19 of 22 men who, by direction of Gen. Mitchell (Or Buell), penetrated nearly 200 miles south into enemy territory and captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Ga., in an attempt to destroy the bridges and tract between Chattanooga and Atlanta.
  • Surles, William H. - Conflict, Civil War. He was born 24 Feb. 1845 in Steubenville, Ohio and served in the Army as a private in Company G, 2nd Ohio Infantry. His place of action was Perryville, KY and date of action was listed as 8 Oct 1862. He was cited in the hottest part of the fire he stepped in front of his colonel to shield him from the enemy’s fire.
