The Sons of the American Revolution was founded on April 30, 1889, and chartered by an Act of Congress on June 9, 1906. The National Society is made of 50 State Societies and over 400 local chapters. The SAR is dedicated to patriotic, historical and educational objectives to help perpetuate the understanding of, reverence for and preservation of those institutions and foundations of American freedom as laid down by our founding fathers and delineated in the Preamble of our Constitution.
To become a member, a man must be 18 years of age, of good standing in the community and is the lineal descendant of an ancestor who was loyal to and rendered active service in the cause of American Independence from England between April 19, 1775 and November 26 1783, or who served at the Battle of Point Pleasant, VA (now WV) October 10, 1774.
The Ebenezer Zane Chapter, OHSSAR, was formed in 1998 at St. Clairsville, Ohio with 13 chapter members. One is now deceased. Chartered February 1999 at Columbus, by the Ohio Society, Sons of the American Revolution.
Meetings are held 6 times per year in Cadiz, Flushing, St. Clairsville and Steubenville, Ohio with most meetings, 3, being held in St. Clairsville.
- Chapter Activities and Ceremonies
Co sponsor and founder, with Moravian Trail Chapter DAR, of the Josiah Fox Chapter of Children of the American Revolution. - Yearly grave marking ceremonies to mark grave sites of Revolutionary War Veterans in area of chapter.
- Maintain a Revolutionary War Uniform Color Guard for ceremonial functions.
- Researched and authored 3 volumes (4 volume set completed) of Patriot books which list grave sites, individual Rev. War service records, historical and genealogical information on burials.
Activities and Community Involvement
- Present SAR Outstanding Cadet Award yearly to Cadets from Martins Ferry High School ROTC.
- Sponsors SAR Knights Essay contests every year for high school seniors.
- Install SAR grave markers and conduct graveside memorial service for deceased members.
More about the grave markers: The SAR installs a 12” X 24” bronze plaque on a concrete base at each patriot’s gravesite. The United States Government furnishes the markers, and the expense for installation material comes from sales of the Revolutionary War Patriots series of books sold by the Chapter. The SAR chapter members do all installation work and conduct patriot burial ceremony.

Published by: Ebenezer Zane Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. This book is the first volume and contains over 250 records and genealogical information about Revolutionary War Patriots who are buried or lived in Belmont, Harrison, and Monroe Counties in Ohio. Sources are included as well as genealogical information. It contains 308 pages.
Revolutionary War Patriots Vol. 2
This book is the second volume and contains over 250 records on Patriots who are buried or lived in Jefferson, Carroll, and Columbiana Counties in Ohio. This book contains 375 pages.
Revolutionary War Patriots Vol. 3
This book contains over 230 records for Patriots who are buried or lived in Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, and Marshall Counties of the West Virginia, Northern Panhandle. This book contains 305 pages.
Revolutionary War Patriots Vol. 4
Volume 4 was printed and first available in January of 2004. It includes Noble, Guernsey, Coshocton, Tuscarawas, and Holmes Counties in Ohio.
