The following was taken from D.W. Thompson’s cemetery journal, Salem Twp, Jefferson County, Ohio Veterans . The following text is “exactly” as it appears in his ledger. The orginal ledger was given to Flora L. VerStraten with permission to copy and extract the data for genealogical use by the chapter

1812 War

The second War with Great Britain

   War was declared on June 19, 1812 and the Treaty of Peace was signed on Dec. 24, 1814.

   War of 1812 Soldiers Graves in Salem Township are as follows:

  1. Robert Wilson served under Captain Robert Morrison’s Co. He died April 14, 1835, at age 55. He is buried in section E. (E.S.)
  2. John Davis was a sergeant and served under Captain Daniel Heaton’s Co.  He died Aug. 25, 1835. He buried in row 5.(A)\
  3. John A. Andrews served in the 1st Militia as a 1 Lieutenant “Colonel” and died in 1835.  He is buried in row 5. (A)
  4. Col. John Andrews served under General Harrison and died May 1, 1842, at age 76. He is buried in row 6, stone 15. (U.C.R.)
  5. Col. James Moores was a private and served under Captain William Stoak’s Co. He died June 4, 1848 at age 63. He is buried in section c, lot 15.(U.C.R.)
  6. John McCullough served under Captain Nathaniel Massil’s (?) Co. and died June 18, 1850 at age 73. He is buried in Sec. A, row 17. (E.S.)
  7. James Thompson served under Captain Daniel Collier’s Co and died Nov 29, 1851 at age 79. He is buried in row 11, stone 19.  (U.P.R.)
  8. James Hamilton Sr. served under Captain George Gibson’s Co. and died May 21, 1852 at age 71. He is buried in row 9, stone 12 (21?)(U.P.R.)
  9. William James served under Captain Andrew Hemphill’s Co. and died May 11, 1857 at age 83. He is buried in row 5, stone 4.  (U.P.R.)
  10. John Martin served under Captain James Renick’s Co. and died Jan. 4, 1859 at age 64.  He is buried in row 10, stone 15.  (U.P.R.)
  11. John Scott served under Captain Thomas Latta’s Co.and died June 30, 1861 at age 66.  He is buried in row 6, stone 21. (U.P.R.)
  12. William McKee was a private and served under Captain Daniel Abel’s Co. and died Jan. 26, 1864 at age 73. He is buried in row 2. (A)
  13. James Holmes was a Lieutenant and served under Captain John Chomer;s (?) Co. and died Feb 14, 1864 at age 71. He is  in row 3.(A)
  14. John Kerr Sr. was an Ensign in Captain John Roadannour Mounted Co and died May 14, 1868 at age 80.  He is buried in row 17. (A)
  15. George Evans served under Captain Delame Mill’s Co. and died May 20, 1868 at age 76. He is buried in section A, row 13. (E.S.)
  16. Adam C. Stewart was a sergeant and served under James Kilgore’s Co.  He died Dec 25, 1870 at age 76 and is buried in row 6, stone 22. (U.P.R.)
  17. George Betz N.S. U.S. D. died Dec 25, 1875 at age 81 and is buried in row 11. (A)
  18. William Dickey served under Captain David Peck’s Co. and died May 22, 1877 at age 83 and is buried in row 8, stone 28. (U.P.R.)
  19. William Betz Corp. N.S. U.S.D. and died April 3, 1881 at age 93 and is buried in row 14. (A)
  20. Michael Vangilder N.S. U.S.D. died in 1882 at the age of 96 and is buried in row 13, stone 8. (U.P.R.)
  21. Henry Norman served under Col. Duvall’s Co. and died Sept 22, 1854 at age 73 and was buried in sec. B, lot 6. (U.C.R.)
  22. John Ferrell died Sept. 18, 1812 at age 56 and is buried in row 6. (A)
