The Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society has been an integral part of preserving and exploring the history of our county for decades. Reflecting on my journey with the chapter, I recall my favorite role before becoming president over 22 years ago—serving as the newsletter editor. Back then, our chapter had about 250 members, and while the logistics of printing, sorting newsletters by zip codes, and delivering them to the post office wasn’t my favorite task, I absolutely loved putting the newsletter together. It was during that time that I learned so much about Jefferson County and its rich history.
Serving in the chapter has always been a rewarding experience, and I often wonder if others have considered stepping into a role within our organization. Serving not only allows us to assist others with their genealogical research but also gives us countless opportunities to learn more about genealogy, the county, and its history. We have numerous board positions available, and we are always in need of office workers and volunteers who share our passion for uncovering and preserving the past.
As we begin 2025, our chapter is seeking volunteers to help in the office. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in genealogy and local history. The role requires just a few hours on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Training can be arranged during those hours or at other times if necessary. The primary responsibilities include assisting researchers, answering phone inquiries, and learning key facts and details about Jefferson County to better serve visitors. All that is needed is a desire to serve, a basic knowledge of genealogy, and a willingness to learn.
Volunteering in the office comes with its perks. Volunteers enjoy quiet, uninterrupted access to original county records and have the chance to explore historical documents that might be unknown to the general public. Many volunteers take notes and delve into materials during their time in the office, building their expertise and deepening their appreciation for our local history.
Since the pandemic, our office has been quieter, and we have found that a four-hour window on Thursdays is sufficient to manage researchers and phone calls. To maintain consistency, I personally handle the chapter’s email to ensure research queries are organized and easily accessible. When additional help is needed, I leave detailed notes for the next volunteer to pick up seamlessly. This system has worked well, but we are always open to new ideas and suggestions to improve our operations.
Volunteering with the Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society is a fulfilling experience that combines service with the joy of discovery. Whether you are interested in office work, serving on the board, or simply lending a hand, your contributions will make a meaningful impact. If you are ready to join us or want to learn more, please reach out. Together, we can make 2025 an exceptional year for our chapter and for the preservation of Jefferson County’s history.
