February 26th 2022 Bray’s Cemetery is located on County Rd., 56 in Island Creek Twp. From State Rt. 7 exit at Costonia, Co. Rd 56. Travel west. Go miles. You can park on the left at the large garage. Walk west. The cemetery is above the road. At one time there was a church which has been gone for some time. The foundation can still be seen. At one time a road went up to the church but when 56 was widened that road was destroyed. The Township Trustees have placed a sign designating the cemetery. The climb up to the cemetery is extremely difficult. The cemetery was read in November of 1963. Chalmers White wrote an article many years ago. “Brays M.E. church cemetery is located on the Island Creek road and has one-half acre. The first burial was Perris Powell in 1847. Early burials were Thomas O’Callaghan, a native of Ireland, 1852. Elizabeth Henry 1852, Samuel S. Henry 1861; Anthony Wayne Galloway 1864; Sarah Ann Morrow 1849. Civil War soldiers buried in this cemetery ae George Taylor, Co. D. 98th Ohio, died in hospital at New Albany, Iowa of wound received at battle of Perryville, KY. He died Nov 22, 1862 aged 30. George Dobbs, Co H. 1st Ohio died August 15, 1862. Verse on marker for Sarah Ann Morrow, 1849, reads: ‘All you that come my grave to see, Prepare for death and follow me; Prepare for death, make no delay, For suddenly I was called away.’ Verse on marker for Maggie A. Fleming, 1890, reads, ‘We loved her, yes we loved her, But the angels loved her more; and they have sweetly called her to yonder shining shore.’ It is a free cemetery and during the last few years only infants of poor people have been buried here.” Reading Completed by |
