{The following was submitted by Civil War, First & Pioneer Families chair, Gail Komar}

Joseph Holmes and his wife Sarah McNabb Holmes

Cyndia Gerken of New Carlisle, OH sent family information and asked me to research for her in 2007. Her information: “According to a family history book, Joseph Holmes and Sarah McNabb were married on 26 Feb 1799 at the home of her parents, George and Martha Shepherd Holmes. Their farm was located in Jefferson County (now Belmont County) about four miles southwest of the present site of St. Clairsville. After their marriage, Joseph and Sarah’s farm was located between the village of Emerson and the western edge of Mount Pleasant. They were buried at Dickerson Church Cemetery near Indian Short Creek. He was a Captain serving in the War of 1812 eventually rising to a Colonel. Cyndia had looked at the early marriage books for Belmont County and found nothing. Sarah died after Joseph so she could not be approved by his records.

I found no marriage for them in Jefferson Co. Joseph Holmes purchased land from Samuel Holmes on 21 Feb 1806 in Sec 25, Twp. 9 (Short Creek Twp. now in Harrison Co.) Range 4
